We do think that both of them did a really awesome job with these, but if we were Matti, we would’ve protested the audience in the studio being the people to decide this given that Sausage is far more popular across America.
We probably liked Sausage’s tattoo a little better, but why go on about honesty and integrity in the studio? It’s a game! you do what you gotta do to win. When the votes came in from the audience, it was pretty clear that Sausage had won and with that, Matti now has to walk around with a tattoo of Sausage’s for the rest of his life.

Who on Ink Master has died?
Scott Marshall – 
Scott Marshall was an extremely talented artist who thrived on work combining technical skill with beautiful imagery. In the season four finale, he beat out Sausage, one of the most admired artists of the series, who would go on to return several times. Marshall won $100,000 from that finale and a whole lot of attention. Tragically, Marshall died of a heroin overdose at the age of 41, a year after winning.
While he remains the only winner to die so quickly after starring on (and winning) the show, he’s not the only Ink Master to pass away. Clint Cummings’ mohawk and straight-up approach to his fellow contestants made him such a memorable artist in season two that they brought him back in season three to be a human canvas.
Sadly, he died of cancer in 2016 at the age of 36, just four years after he made it to seventh place.

Combined, the top four artists – Sausage, Scott, Matti and Halo – won every challenge of the season. Week by week, the judges picked off the other 13 artists, often two at a time, so they could get to a real challenge between the toughest competitors of this season.

But before the artists showed off the final product of their work over the last few months, Navarro talked to Sausage and Scott about game play. Many fans on Twitter agreed that Scott put a target on Sausage’s back since day one, and as a result, Sausage had to deal with more difficult canvases than anyone in the competition.
“If I win the title of ‘Ink Master’ tonight, I know that that’s the best revenge,” Sausage said. Judge Oliver Peck would not distinguish Sausage as having the most difficult canvases. He said the competition was hard for everyone.
But even if Sausage did have a tougher time, Scott defended his game play, saying that he earned the opportunity to hand out canvases, so it wasn’t unfair. Melissa agreed with Sausage that artists shouldn’t have to throw their competitors under the bus to win.
But Jim pointed out that it’s all part of the game. He said the only reason Halo didn’t make it to the final three was because he played the game too nice. Before Sausage and Scott could continue their argument about whether it’s better to be cocky or a whiny crybaby, Navarro moved on to recognize season three winner Joey Hamilton, who was tattooing a four-seasons design live in the studio.
Since winning the title last year, Hamilton says his life is a lot busier with conventions and full-time tattooing. Before getting to the tattoo critiques, the judges couldn’t ignore one of the most dramatic “Ink Master” exits, which occurred this season.
Frustrated with judge Chris Nunez’s constant criticism, artist Kyle Dunbar got physical with Nunez at a flash challenge, which resulted in his dismissal from the show. But the judges invited him back for the season finale for some final comments.
“I feel like I suffered a bit of biased treatment from you,” Kyle said to Nunez. But Nunez said he was only trying to push Kyle to do better in the competition. Kyle responded well to criticism in season three, and it pushed him to the final four. But this season, he just cracked under the pressure.
- Aside from a few spats here and there, Sausage, Scott and Matti kept their composure throughout the competition, which helped them earn the opportunity to tattoo 35-hour back pieces;
- Sausage tattooed an alluring woman with a dark side, which he said is a true collaboration between himself and his canvas;
The woman has smeared makeup running down her face and is holding her heart in her hands. Peck thought Sausage’s design fit the body very nicely, and he liked how it tied into her previous tattoos. He couldn’t find any anatomical flaws, but he didn’t like how the raven popped out of the design and didn’t flow with the design of the woman.
Peck also criticized Sausage’s use of color. Sausage chose to incorporate a lot of skin breaks, but Peck and Nunez both agreed that his color saturation was not as strong as usual. Matti tattooed an angel rising from temptation, which is his interpretation of the struggles he feels on a daily basis.
Peck thought his bold design showed great composition and fit the body well. But there were a few anatomical areas in the neck and the curves of the snake. Peck also criticized the way Matti ended the tattoo, which looked rushed. Nunez agreed that the layout of the tattoo was very nice, but he could have made the dark hair flow better on the body.
Similar to Sausage’s style, Scott tattooed a woman holding a heart to symbolize love and heartache. Peck thought the dynamic color really brought the bold, striking image to life. But he thought it looked like Scott spent too much time on the key elements and didn’t pay much attention to how he ended the tattoo.
Peck and Nunez both agreed that the shape of the face could have been improved. But overall, they loved the flow and color saturation. To help the judges make the difficult decision of choosing only one winner, America voted each week to move one of the final three artists to the final two.
America chose Sausage. The judges then decided to eliminate Matti and put Scott in the final two. After a moment of deliberation, the judges went against America and named Scott the winner of “Ink Master.
” This decision was met with loud boos from the studio audience. Sausage was clearly America’s favorite. He received 1,352 votes (77 percent) in our poll asking which artist deserved the title of “Ink Master,” while Scott received only 280 votes (16 percent).
