– During a lip tattoo session, the tattoo artist will first draw the design you want. They will then trace it onto the desired area of your lips. Using new, sterile needles, your artist will then insert the desired ink colors by making slow, methodical punctures in your skin.
- Once the tattoo is complete, your lips will be covered up with a sterile bandage to prevent infection;
- Expect pain as well as some bleeding during the process;
- You might experience more pain with a lip tattoo compared with other areas of the body, such as an arm or leg tattoo;
It can take about two weeks for a new tattoo to heal, so be sure you understand all aftercare techniques before leaving the studio. Since you can’t clean the inside of your mouth with soap, you’ll need an antibacterial mouth rinse.

Can you eat after a lip tattoo?
Lip Tattoo Preparation and After Care – There are a few things you can do before and after getting your lips tattooed to help minimize the risk of complications and to help the area heal. If you have a history of cold sores , you might consider taking anti-viral medication before tattooing the lips to reduce the chance of an outbreak.
- Your tattoo artist will most likely recommend that you keep using antibacterial mouthrinse after you get the tattoo;
- You’ll also want to be careful about what you eat or drink for the next few days;
- Some foods may be particularly irritating, such as spicy dishes, acidic foods, and hot beverages;
If you’re unsure about how to care for your mouth after getting a tattoo on the lips, your tattoo artist can provide guidance and pointers. It might also be a good idea to check in with your dentist first to see what they think of it and to see if they can offer any tips for caring for your teeth and mouth afterward.
Can you kiss after a lip tattoo?

- Wait six months after lip implant and get written clearance from your surgeon.
Please Note: You will be more sensitive during your menstrual cycle. POST CARE FOR LIPS *Immediately following the procedure, lips may feel dry, chapped, tight and tender to the touch.
- Complete your antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak.
- Apply ointment on lips several times a day. This should be done for at least 10 days post treatment. Do not allow lips to become dry. This may interfere with healed color. During the day if lips feel dry, apply a light layer of ointment. Make sure to dab/press onto skin, do not rub it in.
- Itching is normal, DO NOT PICK!
- No soaps, cleansing creams, or chemicals on lips. Wash your face carefully avoiding the lip area for 10 days.
- Avoid moisture to the lips such as hot soups and hot coffee for 10 days. Drink everything through a straw until lips completely peel.
- DO NOT stretch the lips. Avoid biting into large sandwiches, etc. Cut food into tiny bites.
- Do not bite into greasy, oily, salty or spicy foods, rather cut them up and place them into your mouth.
- While eating, do not constantly wipe your lips with a napkin or keep licking your lips at this will impede the healing process. DO NOT PICK dry healing tissue or you WILL remove the pigment color!
- Avoid water on the new pigmented areas as much as possible, the first 7 days. (when showering, washing face, etc. have ointment on the pigmented area to protect lips from water). Do not stand in front of shower head when showering.
- Avoid underwater swimming and batching for a minimum of 4 weeks to avoid bacterial infection.
- Before brushing your teeth, seal lips with ointment first. Put cotton balls in gum areas so toothbrush will not rub against the lips. No whitening toothpaste (during the healing process). Use a small amount of toothpaste. Take a straw with you to the bathroom to retrieve water to swish with. Do not bleach/whiten your teeth while your lips are healing (about 2 weeks).
- You may apply an ice pack (which must be protected with a wet barrier film of paper toweling, towel or cloth) for 10-minute intervals for the first 48 hours. Ice may be applied every hour or so, if desired. Do not put ice directly on area.
- Do not expose the lips to direct sunlight or tanning beds for 4 weeks. This is new skin and will sunburn easily and direct sun prematurely may also cause scarring and alter pigment color.
- You may wear lipstick, lipgloss, and chapstick after 10 days, make sure the tube of lip product is new.
- Sleeping slightly elevated will help prevent swelling. It’s recommended to sleep on your back on a satin pillow case. If the pillowcase is not satin, you may also wrap your pillowcase at night and replace with a fresh wrap in the morning. This keeps pigment from sticking to the pillowcase at night.
- No smoking while lips are healing (10 days minimum).
- No kissing, rubbing or friction on your newly tattooed lips until after 10 days or you may lose pigment.
- Lips may be dry for 3 to 6 months depending on the body reaction.
Expect moderate swelling, usually one to three days following the procedure. Scabbing may make the lips feel thick. Lips will fade up to 50% after the first 5 days. While healing, the tattoo will look patchy. This is due to skin regeneration and healing. Some New Clients may require multiple sessions ( at an additional cost) to achieve their desired density and shape.
- The above Pre and Post-Care for lips will affect how quickly or slowly you heal;
- Mature age, poor diet, stress, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, age, general health, sleep/fatigue;
- The more fatigued you are the lower your immune system is and infection is more likely to occur;
Please get plenty of rest and drink lots of water to hydrate prior to procedure. *** We have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY for those to those who fail to follow our Pre and Post Care Instructions. Failing to follow the above instructions will result in your DOLLISTIC artist denying your service and possibly future services.
Do lip tattoos get infected easily?
Even though many consider lip tattoos to be fairly safe, here’s why dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll told the Canadian Press she has reservations about them: It’s common to experience lots of pain and swelling after the procedure. The risk of infection is high because the mouth harbors hundreds of kinds of bacteria.

Every client’s skin responds differently to these treatments, and this information acts as a guideline only. EYEBROWS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT DO NOT: Work out the day of the procedure. Discontinue tanning for one-week prior. DO NOT: Take Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E or Ibuprofen 24 hours before the procedure.
- No alcohol or caffeine the day of procedure;

The treated area will appear much darker and bold due to the oxidation process during the healing period. If the area is kept clean and dry, then only a light pigment film (not thick scab) will appear after 4-7 days. As the area heals it will become dry and itchy.
DO NOT scratch or itch. As the pigment film starts to flake off DO NOT pick, scratch, itch or pull off any of the areas which are peeling. Choosing to pick at flakes and peeling areas will pull out pigment, and result in spots left without any pigment or in some cases scarring.
As the area continues to heal, a softer more natural result will be revealed underneath. Please Note: within the first 4 weeks, the amount of pigment that you see may seem very faint. It may seem like the pigment has been lost. Please be advised: that as the skin regenerates the new skin can in some cases hide the hair strokes completely.
You must allow the full healing time of 8 weeks to see the true color and result. AFTERCARE Pre-wash hands with an antibacterial soap before washing your eyebrows, or applying the provided post care cream.
In order to avoid infection. Day One (Day of appointment) – Wait 2 hours, letting the wounds weep. After 2 hours you must wipe off any excess lymph with a moist cotton pad using distilled water. Repeat this every 30 mins. Do NOT apply healing cream. Avoid showering, if possible, on day one.
Day Two through Nine – At Night gently wash the treated area with warm water and a mild cleanser. Pat the area dry, do not wipe. For oily skin, apply a VERY THIN layer of the provided healing cream with a cotton swab (only) ONCE a day (pm).
For dry skin, apply a VERY THIN layer of the provided healing cream with a cotton swab (only) TWICE a day (am/pm). Before showering, apply a thin layer of the provided healing cream to the eyebrows to protect them from moisture. Keep your face away from the shower head, do not let water stream directly onto your face.

How do you heal a lip tattoo fast?
Wash your lips with water or a fragrance-free cleanser on a cotton pad before hydrating the area with occlusive balm or gentle moisturizer (Otsuji recommends Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Zensa Healing Cream, according to her commentary for Byrdie).
How long does swelling last after lip tattoo?
While it’s normal to have some initial swelling after having your lip color tattooed, as long as you are in normal health and, have chosen the right artist for you , you should be pleasantly surprised at how easily and quickly your lips safely heal. Proper aftercare will affect how long your permanent lip color lasts.
- We’re going to take a look at how your permanent lipstick will look as it’s healing, and the two most common and popular methods of lip blushing aftercare;
- Days 1-2: You love your new lip color! Your lip color will appear brighter than it will heal;
Your lips will also feel swollen and tender. Your color will begin to darken temporarily throughout the day as the pigment oxidizes. Days 3-14: Swelling will have finished. Your lips will feel dry and start the flaking process. Allow shedding to happen naturally.
As your lips flake, it will appear that your lip color is very light and “frosty”. This is only temporary as you are still healing. Over the next several days your lip color will reappear until it fully blooms.
Getting A Lip Blush Tattoo – Full Process & Healed Results 👄
Days 28-42: It’s time for your follow up. By this time your lips are fully healed and it’s recommended that you come back in to touch up any color that might have healed too light or at all imperfectly. Applying a second layer of new color will build off of your previous color, creating a more saturated and longer-lasting lip.
What can I eat after lip tattoo?
WHAT TO EXPECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PROCEDURE? – The color will look bold like lipstick immediately after. Your lips will look slightly larger than normal as if you may have had lip filler injection. This will only last a day or two. The size of your lips will shrink back to normal and the color will significantly fade up to 50% within the first 3 days.
You will lose color on the inside of your lips first , the edges last. A crust that forms will start to flake away revealing a lighter and more natural color. In many cases the client wishes to go darker on their touch-up appointment.
It is always best to air on the side of caution on the first procedure. It is easy to add more color, but not to remove it. Lips will be tender at first. Drink through a straw. Choose foods you can place in your mouth with a fork without touching the lips. Day of Appointment (Day 1) You may apply an ice pack (which must be protected with a clean wet barrier film of paper toweling, towel or cloth) for 10 minute intervals for the first 24 hours.
- Swelling and redness.
- Tenderness.
- Flaking and mild itchiness as the lips heal.
- Dry skin that may remain for up to 3 weeks.
- In the first 12-48 hours, while the skin is in the process of forming a protective scab and the lymph secretion is active you may see fluid or ooze on the skin. This is normal but the fluid must be patted with a water wet wipe and dried with a clean paper towel so that the secretion does not crust and block the skin from breathing.
- Keep the lips clean at all times and moisturized with the ointment provided. Try not to disturb the crust when cleaning and let it fall off by itself. Lips will ooze a couple of days.
- To cleanse the lips please use the water wipes provided to compress each morning, midday and at night. Each time after cleaning and several times a day apply a thin layer of the ointment provided to your lips with a Q-tip or clean hands with light touch. This will reduce the risk of secondary infection and should be done for at least 7 days post procedure.
- Ice may be applied every hour or so, if desired;
- Do not put ice directly on the area;
- (Days 1 – 10) The treated area may experience the following symptoms for 1 to 10 days after the treatment, which are all common and will dissipate in a short period of time;
Do not allow lips to become dry. This may interfere with healed color. Do not use aggressive movements on the skin, be gentle. NEVER put the ointment on a wet or damp tattoo.
- Lips will peel for a week. Allow them to flake off on their own. Picking and pulling off skin that is not ready to come off will cause pigment loss and can pull out deeper tissue. The edges or lip liner will be the last to fall off. Pulling this off will result in an uneven splotchy line or an indented scar.
- During the peeling process it may look like there is not much color there. Color is more apparent by the second week and will continue to clarify until 5 weeks.
The following must be avoided:
- Do not rub, pick or scratch, as the color may heal unevenly and you could risk infection, which in turn could lead to scarring. Let any scabbing or dry skin naturally exfoliate away.
- Do not excessively stretch lips by smiling big or puckering lips with smoking while they are healing. Those motions push and pull against the lip edges, applying tension and friction between the strong normal skin surrounding the mouth and the broken inflamed lip edges. Lip skin is a continuation of the delicate mucous membrane in the mouth. It is not strong like normal skin.
- Avoid direct sun exposure/tanning or tanning beds for 4 weeks after the procedure. Wear a hat when outdoors and/or big sunglasses.
- No smoking while your lips are healing (approximately one week).
- No kissing, rubbing or friction on the treated area until it is totally healed or else you will lose color.
- Avoid heavy sweating, exercise, sports, swimming, sauna, steam rooms, jacuzzi, and long hot showers for 10 days.
- When showering make sure you avoid direct water pressure on the treated area for 10 days. You may apply aquaphor to cover your lips.
- Avoid use of skincare or cosmetics on the treated area (be careful using your foundation or powders. )
- Refrain from using cleansing creams or moisturizers that contain Retin-A, glycol acids, anti acne ingredients, AHA’s/BHA’s on the worked area.
- Avoid eating hot, spicy, salty and acidic foods for the first 2 weeks and drink liquids through a straw for 3 days. While eating, do not constantly wipe your lips with a napkin or keep licking your lips as this will impede the healing process.
- Avoid using toothpaste products with whitening properties as this can bleach the color in your lips also. Avoid For 10 days
- Do not receive bleaching, waxing, electrolysis or laser hair removal treatments close to your enhancement. Avoid for 2 weeks.
- Avoid using exfoliants, acids such as glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acids lactic acid, salicylic acid, fruit acid and Vitamin A on the tattooed area for 30 days. (Causes premature fading)
- Use a fresh pillowcase. Avoid sleeping on your face for the first 10 days.
- Do not schedule any facials, microdermabrasion, microneedling, peels or laser treatments for at least 4 weeks. They can darken/lighten or distort the pigment.
- Avoid drinking alcohol in excess, as it may lead to slow healing of wounds.
- Do Not use Blistex, Carmex or Chapstick while healing.
- Avoid driving in open air vehicles such as convertibles, boats, bicycles, or motorcycles.
- Do not perform tasks related to heavy household cleaning such as; garage or storage cleaning where there is a lot of airborne debris–now is not the time!
- Do not have cosmetic injections on lips for at least three weeks prior to your appointment.
NOTE:
- All procedures must HEAL, PEEL and FADE! The approximate healing period is 10 days, however healing can be prolonged if your immune system is compromised, if you are generally stressed and by poor diet.
- Clients with sun damage, scar tissue (from injury or fever blisters) and clients with implants may not have strong results.
- Hyperpigmentation can happen on any lip client without warning.
- Until your skin sloughs off and regenerates you will not be able to see true results. It takes 28 days for the skin to slough off and regenerate itself. Keep in mind that even with proper care, some areas may look uneven or patchy. It is absolutely normal because your natural skin regeneration is not a process that your artist can control.
- Healed results vary per individual client. We have no control over what occurs during the healing process. Lips are a muscle and will need 1 to 3 sessions to complete the process of this procedure. Lips are unpredictable. Some clients will yield to a strong healed lip color. Others will only heal with slight color uptake.
This is the purpose of the complimentary touch up included after 6-8 weeks from the initial session to fine tune your enhancement assure that richness of color, symmetry, density in the shape and desired effect is achieved.
This will vary on an individual basis.
- You can resume wearing lipstick once lips are healed. It is advised to use a new lipstick after all lip treatments.
Following the proper post-care is necessary to achieve the best results. When scheduling an appointment for a cosmetic tattoo keep in mind the healing time of the procedure will depend on your body’s regeneration, age, immune system and lifestyle. You’ll find that your cosmetic tattoo will last between 3 – 5 years after their complimentary touch up session.
- Future touch-up appointments are required to maintain their shape and depth of color. If you do not maintain, the color will lighten over time. Fading greatly depends on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, pigment color used, broken capillaries, and iron deficiency. We suggest that if you want to maintain your lips so that they always look their best, plan on scheduling a touch up once a year for best results.
- Use a good sunscreen on the lips if you plan to be in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Sun exposure will fade your cosmetic tattoo overtime. Smokers, “sun worshippers”, or anyone with skin that is in a state of distress may have less desirable results. Sun exposure will make the color fade faster. A lip balm with SPF applied daily on tattooed area is needed to help keep the color true.
- If you are planning a chemical peel, laser procedure or MRI scan, inform the technician of your cosmetic tattoo since there is iron-oxide in the pigments. Careful application must be taken to avoid affecting the tattooed area. If you are planning to have laser treatments, tell your laser specialist to avoid the pigmented area. Laser may cause pigment to turn black.
- The use of Retin-A/Tretinoin, hydroquinone, or any other rapid skin exfoliation used regularly on any area surrounding the brow area will cause your cosmetic tattoo to fade prematurely.
- The use of chemical peels, acid peels or any brightening product that targets hyper-pigmentation used regularly on the forehead region can cause permanent eyebrows to fade prematurely.
- The use of exfoliating cleansers, scrubs, cleansers with acne fighting ingredients or “acid” in the name will cause rapid exfoliation of the skin containing the pigment and will increase odds of premature fading. If during the healing process you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to email us at hello@idartsy. com or call us 571-989-4949

Can you drink alcohol after a lip tattoo?
Drinking before or after – That drink beforehand is not smart. Bruno Vincent/Getty Images If you’re thinking about downing some liquid courage before taking the plunge, think again. Drinking before and after getting a tattoo is a no-no. Alcohol thins your blood, which means excess bleeding. When you bleed more than normal, it can cause visibility issues for the artist, potentially compromising the quality of the design.
- Excess bleeding can also thin the ink;
- Of course, there’s also the fact that alcohol impairs judgment, and you don’t want to make permanent decisions while impaired;
