What To Use To Cover A Tattoo?

What To Use To Cover A Tattoo
Download Article Download Article Sure, you love showing off your awesome tattoo to your friends and peers, but you know that if your great-grandmother ever saw it, she’d go into cardiac arrest faster than you can say, “It’s only temporary!” Whether you want to hide your tattoo from conservative relatives, cover it up for a wedding or special event, or look more professional in your next job interview, you can quickly and easily cover a tattoo with makeup if you know what approach to take.

  1. 1 Cleanse your skin. Before you begin, it’s a good idea to cleanse your tattooed skin with a wipe or a little facial wash. If you have a large tattoo, take a shower or bath. This prepares the skin to receive the makeup.
    • Keep in mind that you shouldn’t attempt to cover a tattoo with makeup unless it’s fully healed, otherwise you could ruin the ink or develop an infection.
    • Tattoos can take as long as 45 days to heal completely. Don’t attempt to cover a tattoo that is fresh and hasn’t peeled yet.
  2. 2 Apply a light concealer. Take a heavy coverage liquid or cream concealer that’s several shades lighter than your natural skin tone. Alternatively, use a color-correcting concealer.
    • Use a makeup sponge or stippling brush to apply the concealer to the tattoo. Try to dab or blot the concealer onto the skin instead of rubbing it. Rubbing simply pushes the product around rather than adding coverage.
    • As a result, blotting will also help you to avoid wasting too much of your concealer. Once you’ve coated the tattoo in an even layer, wait a minute or two for it to dry. Don’t worry if the tattoo is still visible.

  3. 3 Add foundation. Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly. Spray foundations are the easiest to work with and provide the most even coverage, but liquid or cream foundations will also work.
    • If you’re using a spray foundation, give the can a good shake then hold it approximately 6 to 8 inches (15. 2 to 20. 3 cm) away from the tattoo. Spray the foundation in spurts, rather than spraying in a continuous stream. This will prevent you from being too heavy-handed with it. Spray until you have evenly covered the tattoo, then give it 60 seconds to set. [1]
    • If you’re using a liquid or cream foundation, use a makeup sponge or stippling brush to apply the product, using the same blotting technique you used with the concealer. If necessary, use your fingers to smooth out the top layer and blend around the edges.
  4. 4 Cover it with translucent powder. Use a large powder brush to apply a layer of translucent powder over the foundation. This provides a matte finish. [2]
  5. 5 Spitz the makeup with setting spray. When you are done layering the foundation, concealer, and powder, finish with a light spritz of makeup setting spray. This sets the coverage and will prevent the makeup from rubbing off onto any clothes or furniture. Allow the area to dry before touching it or attempting to cover it with clothing. [3]
  6. 6 Do a trial run before the event, if desired. If you plan on covering up your tattoo for a specific event such as a job interview or wedding, it’s a good idea to do a trial run beforehand. This will give you a chance to practice your technique and ensure that your makeup is the right color for your skin tone.

  1. 1 Use tattoo cover-up. There are many products on the market designed specifically for covering up tattoos. These products are highly effective, due to their heavy coverage and broad selection of colors, which can match nearly any skin tone. The only downside to these products is their cost. Some of the best products include:
    • Tattoo Camo: This tattoo camouflage brand provides a complete kit for covering your tattoo. The product comes in a tube which can be rubbed directly over the tattooed skin with no need for brushes or sponges. The kit also provides a special cleanser for removing the product. The kit is available from their website.
    • Dermablend: Dermablend is a fantastic product which was originally designed by dermatologists to cover up scars and skin conditions. It is hypoallergenic, making it an excellent option for people with sensitive skin. It can last for up to 16 hours. It is also available online.
    • Covermark: Covermark Tattoo Removal is another tattoo removal kit, which is available in variety of shades. The kit includes a skin primer, a liquid foundation, a matte powder, and a special applicator.
  2. 2 Try stage makeup. Stage makeup provides extremely heavy and long-lasting coverage and is good for tattoos covering large areas of skin. You can use a color-correcting concealer underneath the stage makeup to hide the tattoo.
    • It’s possible to buy stage makeup in a variety of skin colors, but you can also use plain white makeup to cover up the tattoo, then use your regular foundation on top to match your skin tone.
    • Some of the most popular and widely available stage makeup brands include Killer Cover, Ben Nye, and Mehron.
  3. 3 Get an airbrush tan. If your tattoo is quite small or light in color, it may be possible to cover it up with an airbrush spray tan. These spray tans not only darken the skin but also even out skin tone and cover imperfections.
    • Call into your local tanning salon to see if they offer airbrushing services. Show them your tattoo and ask them if they think the treatment would effectively cover it up.
    • At-home spray tan products such as Sally Hansen airbrush legs can also be used to try to cover up small, light-colored tattoos.

What is the best product to cover a tattoo?

What color concealer covers tattoos?

If you have tattoos , chances are you love your body art and would never dream of hiding it. But if you’re ever in a position where you’d rather have your tats covered up—like if you’ll be attending your stuffy cousin’s wedding and know she’ll freak out about the pictures—experts assure us it can easily be done.

  • “For covering tattoos, you’ll need three products,” NYC makeup artist Suzy Gerstein  says;
  • First, you’ll need a specific color-correcting concealer;
  • For fair skin, she recommends a salmon-colored concealer;

For a medium to tan complexion, she recommends peach, and orange for darker skin. The second two products you’ll need are a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly, and a translucent or colorless setting powder.

How can I cover up a fresh tattoo at work?

Tattoo Aftercare –

  1. Leave the bandage on for a minimum of 4 hours to overnight.
  2. After the elapsed time period, gently remove the bandage. Make sure your hands are clean. If any sticking occurs, splash warm water on the bandage. Warm water will help ease the bandage off. Be careful not to rip or tear it off. This can harm your new tattoo. There will probably be dried ink and blood on the bandage. Don’t worry, this is normal.
  3. Once the bandage is off, wash the tattoo with warm, soapy water. Be gentle and use your hands, rather than a washcloth or a sponge. Anti-bacterial soap is best, but a low fragrance soap is also acceptable.
  4. Rinse by splashing warm water over the tattoo. Do not soak it or let shower spray hit it directly (this can damage or hinder the healing of your tattoo).
  5. Gently pat dry with a clean towel.
  6. Allow the new tattoo to be exposed to the air for a few hours before applying aftercare cream.
  7. When applying aftercare cream or moisturizer, only use a very thin coat. A number of creams can be used. Tattoo Salve, Tattoo Goo, Vitamin E cream, Lubriderm, etc. DO NOT USE PREPARATION-H! It is used for shrinkage, not tattoos.
  8. Apply aftercare cream twice a day for 1-2 weeks (amount of application will vary due to skin type).
  9. You do not need to re-bandage the tattoo unless you work or play in a dirty environment. If this is the case, use clean, dry gauze to cover the tattoo. DO NOT USE SARAN WRAP!! IT does not allow your tattoo to breathe.
  10. The tattoo will form a scab within the next day or two. This scabs will start to fall off over the next week to 2 weeks. Let the scabs fall off on their own. DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH AT THE TATTOO!! Pulling the scabs off prematurely can pull the ink out damaging the tattoo. Once the scabs have fallen off, you may notice dry skin on and around the tattoo.

Tattoo Tips

  • For the first night, try not to sleep on your new tattoo. If needed, wear old clothes to bed. Your tattoo may be susceptible to sticking to your sheets or clothes. It is better that it sticks to you clothes rather than your sheets. If the tattoo sticks to your clothes, splash warm water on it and remove the clothing from the tattoo very gently.
  • Remember, this is an open wound, so use common sense. DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH!! If the itch is getting unbearable, apply a very small amount of moisturizer.
  • Stay out of pools, hot tubs, rivers, etc. until the scabs have completely fallen off. Do not let the shower spray hit your tattoo directly. The spray can blow the scabs off prematurely. It is okay if water rolls over it. Remember to pat it dry gently.
  • Do not tan for at least a month. The skin over the tattoo will be especially sensitive to sunlight when the scabs fall off and your skin can burn very easily.
  • For at least the first year use a 60 spf or higher sunblock when spending long periods in the sun with your new tattoo exposed.
  • If touch-ups are needed, wait 3-4 weeks. Allow the skin to return to a normal state (dull finish on surface).
  • If you have any questions or concerns, contact your artist or shop for further information.
  • Most importantly, enjoy your new tattoo.

How can I fade my tattoo naturally?

Other Tattoo Removal / Fading Options: – Lemon Juice – Prior to getting professional treatment, lemons are a great natural remedy to lighten a tattoo. Lemons are commonly known as a lightening agent for skin. Apply fresh-squeezed or pure lemon juice to your tattoo up to three times a day, and within several weeks, the ink of your tattoo, specifically the darker colours should be noticeably faded.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Exfoliation – Exfoliation paired with hydrogen peroxide can do wonders to gradually fade tattoo ink naturally. This is because exfoliation removes dead skin while hydrogen peroxide is a skin lightening agent that has bleaching properties.

For this process, you want to first exfoliate your skin safely and naturally with a salt or sugar scrub. After spending a few minutes exfoliating, dab hydrogen peroxide on the area. Ensure that you are not breaking any new skin during exfoliation, so make sure to stop if it starts to get painful or raw.

Professional Tattoo Removal – Natural processes don’t always work for everyone, and dark inks can be the toughest to fade. For this reason, going to a professional tattoo removal center might be your best option.

This will also depend on the skin depth of the tattoo ink. Many of the natural lightening options only fade more surface-level inks. Most dermatologists will be able to help you lighten or remove your tattoo using lasers. All of the aforementioned methods for lightening and fading a tattoo will vary in success and time depending on skin type.

This will also depend on the type and size of the tattoo as larger and more colourful tattoos will likely take longer to fade than small, simple ones. In general, many cover up tattoo artists will suggest undergoing a few rounds of tattoo laser removal before getting a cover up.

A normal laser treatment tattoo removal process will take about 12-15 sessions to completely remove the old tattoo. Fading a tattoo for a cover up should only require about 3-4 sessions, and will cost a fraction of the price of full removal.

Does tattoo concealer really work?

Tattoos have officially become mainstream: A recent poll by Ipsos showed that roughly one-third of Americans are rocking ink. We’re all about body art , of course. But we also recognize there are moments when you may wish your tattoos would disappear for a hot minute.

There’s good news: If you want to hide that stick-and-poke of your ex’s initials or that owl tattoo that spoke to you one night after too many vodka tonics, you have options besides removal. Tattoo cover-up makeup is surprisingly effective and there are plenty of amazing concealers and foundations that can render your ink practically invisible for the day.

However, it is important to note makeup should only be applied to fully healed tattoos. Read on for the tattoo cover-up makeup that experts always keep in their kits. Meet the Expert

Loading Something is loading. Following is a transcript of the video. Narrator: Covering tattoos for film and television requires more than just regular foundation. Here are the tricks makeup artists use to get the most realistic look. Kanokporn and Rossukhon Khemasingkhi, who go by Joy and Rose, are sisters and graduates of LA’s Cinema Makeup School, where pros study to learn makeup specifically for film and TV.

  • Today, they’re working on Yvonne Kang, a tattoo artist in LA who has about 40 tattoos for them to cover;
  • Before they start, they cleanse the skin with makeup remover and alcohol to remove all oils and lotions;

The first step is to color correct. They use a reddish cream pigment with a sponge to cover up tattoos with darker ink. On Yvonne, that will be the majority of her tattoos. The red color helps cancel out the dark ink. They use a brush to cover up the smaller lines and dots, which helps control how much product is added.

  1. Yvonne: When I had to cover my own tattoos for a wedding, I used a bright red lipstick, and it was not a good time;
  2. It did not work like this;
  3. Narrator: After each section, they spray Green Marble SeLr Spray and use powder to seal the product;

Rose: Normally you can use only the powder, but if you use the Green Marble, it’s more long-lasting, like, eight hour or until you clean up. Joy: Even the hot weather or water or wrapping the clothes, it still stay on your skin. It’s like a second skin. Narrator: The overall color-correcting step took about 90 minutes between two artists because of the amount of tattoos.

  1. The next step is to cover up the red with this Jordane Total Tattoo Coverage Palette;
  2. The alcohol-activated palette has 10 base shades, so they mixed two shades together to match Yvonne’s skin tone;
  3. Rose: I tap like this because its cover is very good, but if you do like this, then you have line, like this;

It’s not so good. Narrator: Unlike regular foundation, the cream formula will be transfer-resistant once it sets. They seal the cream and set it with powder section by section. Then they lightly airbrush the entire body to hide the shine from the concealer and create a consistent skin color throughout.

  1. Joy: The airbrush can help to look much more realistic and not shiny, her skin;
  2. Narrator: The final step is to speckle some beige, brown, and red dots to give the makeup a natural skin-like texture;
  3. They use this alcohol-based palette by Cinema Makeup School;

The alcohol-based paints are more long-lasting on the skin than water or oil. And after over two hours, here is the final transformation. Yvonne: It feels very strange, actually. It looks very strange, but it looks really good. It’s not coming off on me, which is, yeah, which is awesome.

  1. Because the last time I did it, it was smearing everywhere;
  2. Narrator: To remove everything, they use isopropyl myristate to break the product down, followed by makeup wipes;
  3. Joy: Normally we use this to remove off special effects makeup;

So it’s very strong to remove the makeup, but it’s very soft on the skin. Narrator: The makeup can last over eight hours on set and will take about 30 minutes to remove. Producer: You’re back! Yvonne: I know! It feels like it never happened..

Can you cover up a black tattoo?

What to Do If You Want to Add Color Over Black Ink – This is where things get a bit more complicated. The brighter the colors the more of a challenge it can be. Navy blue is one thing, but hot pink? That’s a whole other story. That said, you’re not without recourse, you just need to approach the tattoo in a whole new way.

For starters, you will need to fade the black tattoo to prepare for a cover-up. This can be effectively accomplished through laser tattoo fading (vs outright removal). In this case state-of-the-art laser technology will be employed to break apart the black ink particles to the point that they become noticeably lighter.

The brighter the colors you want to add for your new tattoo the greater number of laser fading sessions will be required. Yes, this adds to the length of time (months in most cases) it will take before your skin will be prepared to receive the new and preferred tattoo, but it’s worth the investment.

When should I cover my new tattoo?

This info should guide you through the care of healing your tattoo, but if you have any other questions while it is healing, do not hesitate to contact your artist directly or call the shop for immediate reply. There are no stupid questions about healing.

  • – After your tattoo is completed, your artist will bandage your tattoo for your trip home;
  • Leave the bandage on for one to three hours;
  • When you take the bandage off, wash it with very warm water (as hot as is comfortable) and mild liquid hand soap (like Dr;

Bronner’s, Dial or Softsoap, just no perfumed or exfoliating body washes). Pat it dry gently with a paper towel, and let it air dry the rest of the way (never scrub the tattoo with a towel or sponge). Then you will apply a very small amount of Aquaphor Ointment or plain, unscented skin lotion (we recommend Aveeno, Lubriderm, Curel, or any of their generics) to the tattoo, just enough to lightly moisturize.

  • Your first night sleeping, your artist might recommend you re-wrap the tattoo with plastic wrap (like Saran Wrap) to sleep without the tattoo sticking to your sheets. This is generally for larger or solid-color tattoos. If your artist did not recommend re-wrapping, just let the tattoo stay exposed to air overnight.
  • Every day from then on, you will wash the tattoo in the morning and at night, and apply lotion 3 times a day or so, or whenever the tattoo feels dry or tight.
  • Always wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
  • DO NOT apply Vaseline, Neosporin, Bacitracin or any other medicated or perfumed product to your tattoo.
  • After a few days, the tattoo will form a thin scab over it, and in about a week the scab will begin to flake off in the shower. DO NOT pick or scratch at the scab, just keep it clean and moist and the scabs will all fall off by themselves in about two weeks. Picking any of the scabs off will cause faded color and damage to the skin.

During healing do NOT:

  • Wrap the tattoo after the first night (wearing breathable clothes over it is fine as long as they are not causing friction. (Keeping tattoos wrapped in plastic or bandages will stop air from getting to the tattoo, slow healing, and make gross stuff grow in there. )
  • Submerge the tattoo in water. This means baths, pools and oceans. Regular showering is fine.
  • Expose it to strong sunlight (Like outdoor activities or beach days. Walking to your car is fine)
  • Shave over the tattoo (ouch!)

When all the scabs fall off and the skin feels smooth again to the touch, it is all healed and you can shave over it again, and swim and everything else. Sometimes after the scab falls off there is a secondary shiny, raised or waxy coat over the tattoo. This is just another healing layer of skin. Continue to moisturize it and it will smooth out by itself over time. If you have any questions about your tattoo while its healing you are always welcome to come by the shop and have us check it out, or email the artist who did the tattoo with “AFTERCARE” in the subject line for an immediate response.

Do not slather a big, thick coat of product over it; just enough for it to stay moist and flexible. If you are using Aquaphor, you can switch to a plain lotion after the first few days. Lotion is generally fine for everyone, your artist will recommend if you would benefit from ointment.

If something doesn’t look perfect After your tattoo is finished healing, we’ll do our best to make it right. Sometimes with excessive scabbing, or other unpredictable reactions during healing, your skin can reject some ink, leaving a “light spot” that is closer to your skin color in the tattoo (or a line might get thinner or lighter in one spot).

This is common as its unlikely your body will accept every spot of pigment uniformly, so just contact your artist via email after your tattoo is finished healing with a photo to see if a small touch up is in order.

Unless you were negligent during the care of your tattoo, touch-ups are very minor and quick, and guaranteed by our artists if you contact them about it within 3 months of getting the tattoo. Because older tattoos that have settled in fully and aged require more work to make uniform, we suggest coming in as soon as possible when it’s healed, as touch ups are performed for a fee at the artist’s discretion after 3 months.

Can I use Saran Wrap on my tattoo?

According to tattooist Harv Angel, caring for a new tattoo begins before the needle touches skin. His first piece of advice to anyone looking to get their first tattoo or add some new ink to a collection: Do your research. “Make sure that you’re not getting tattoo in somebody’s carport or their kitchen or their spare bedroom.

  1. Go to a licensed tattooer, somebody’s who certified, somebody who has a track record,” he explained;
  2. Angel has been on island since 1977 and a serious tattooist since 1982, he says;
  3. Low Tide Tattoo, which his business cards bill as “Guam’s Only Fully Certified Tattoo Shop,” opened in its Tumon location across from the Pacific Island Club in 2001;

The point of doing research before getting a new tattoo is to ensure that a tattooist is using clean, safe practices. “Make sure they’re using aseptic procedures,” Angel explained. “Make sure that they’re using disposable needles, disposable tubes. Make sure that they’re wearing gloves — and not just latex gloves, because some people are allergic to latex.

You wanna use Nitrile (gloves). ” PIKA:  Family gets matching tattoos to honor late father PIKA: Tips for those getting their first tattoos When your new tattoo is done, it will need to be wrapped up with a sterile bandage or absorbent covering.

“Never let a tattooer wrap your tattoo in Saran wrap,” Angel warned. “Saran wrap does not absorb the blood and other body fluids that come from a fresh tattoo. So you want, you want the tattoo wrapped in a sterile bandage, something that’s absorbent. Saran wrap is a no-no.

  1. ” And the tattoo shouldn’t stay covered for too long;
  2. “Tattoo care is gonna vary a little bit from shop to shop, y’know?” he advised;
  3. “Generally, you leave the tattoo wrapped up for at least a couple of hours;

And after removing the sterile bandage, you wash the tattoo — soap and water. It doesn’t matter what kind of soap. ” When drying off a new tattoo, make sure to pat it dry. “You don’t wipe it dry,” Angel said. A tattooist may give some ointment for new tattoos, or you can buy A&D ointment, Neosporin or Bacitracin over the counter.

There are specialized tattoo-care products like the H2Ocean brand, but Angel doesn’t think it’s necessary to spend that kind of money. Angel said he’s even heard of people using Listerine or Preparation H, though he couldn’t say he would recommend those.

No matter what product is used, people with new tattoos should remember to keep their hands clean before touching the tattoo. Angel also advised against using too much ointment: “You wanna put (the ointment) on thin. You don’t glob it on real thick. ‘Cause if you put it on real thick, that keeps air from getting to the tattoo. “There’s probably going to be a little scabbing, similar to — I tell people, similar to like a peeling sunburn,” Angel said. “It’s not a thick scab, but there’s going to probably be a little bit of scabbing. That’s not something you want to pick or scratch at. ” The best advice is to use common sense and mostly leave the new tattoo alone. “Don’t turn it into some difficult science project,” Angel said.

  • And air’s a real important component to the healing process;
  • ” Expect your tattoo to ooze some fluids, including blood and ink, and then to scab over;
  • “It’s not like you’re healing up after open-heart surgery;

It is a wound — it’s a controlled wound, if you want to look at this way. ” For those particularly worried about infection, make sure to do research, but also relax. Angel has been in the business for over three decades and has never seen a tattoo go bad.

“In all the years I’ve been in tattoo shops and tattooing, I’ve never seen an infected tattoo,” he said. Aside from germs, there are other things new tattoos should be protected from. “Sun is the worst thing for your skin, it’s the worst thing for tattoos.

Look what the sun does to car paint. You should never sunburn yourself. Stay out of the sun. You want to show off your tattoo, but you don’t want to sunburn it,” Angel said. Angel said people with tattoos eventually find a routine that suits them. “After you get several tattoos, you find a routine that works well for you,” Angel said, “‘cause you’re going to hear different things from different tattooers.

How can I make my tattoo fade faster?

Download Article Download Article While results can be mixed, there are a couple of ways to reduce the appearance of unwanted tattoos without resorting to surgery. Your best bet is to begin daily applications of a mild skin-lightening agent like hydrogen peroxide or lemon juice. If you’re looking for a faster, more direct approach, you could also try exfoliating the tattoo thoroughly 2-3 times a day with a homemade salt scrub or similar abrasive mixture.

  1. 1 Use common household items to lighten your tattooed skin naturally. Lemon and lime juice , glycolic acid, and hydrogen peroxide can all produce mild bleaching action when applied directly to the skin. Chances are, you have one or more of these items sitting around in your pantry or medicine cabinet right now. [1]
    • Some holistic skincare experts also swear by the skin-lightening properties of undiluted essential oils, such as lavender oil.
    • Avoid mixing multiple lightening agents. Not only will this not make them more effective, it could cause an unsafe chemical reaction.
    • The actual effectiveness of topical skin lightening solutions is up for debate. If you decide to experiment with any of these substances, you’ll be doing so at your own risk. There’s a chance that they may not work permanently, or that they could result in scarring or similar damage. [2]
  2. 2 Try a tattoo remover cream if you’d rather use a commercial product. There are a number of creams, lotions, and gels on the market that claim to be able to rapidly fade subdermal ink. If you’re not interested in DIY solutions, consider giving one of these products a shot. Keep in mind, however, that there’s no hard evidence that they make much of a difference. [3]
    • Ask your tattoo artist if they have any recommendations for tattoo remover products that do what they’re advertised to do.
    • Tattoo removers often contain harsh chemicals, and could lead to irritation or even permanent scarring if applied regularly or incorrectly. [4]

  3. 3 Rub your skin lightener of choice onto the tattoo until it’s fully absorbed. Saturate a washcloth, clean sponge, or folded strip of gauze with the liquid, then apply it to directly to your skin. You can do this by either blotting the area or covering the entire tattoo with the cloth, sponge, or gauze, if it’s small enough. What’s important is that the liquid makes contact with every part of the ink. [5]
    • For best results, allow your skin lightener to sit on your skin for 5-10 minutes after applying it.
    • You may need a helping hand if you’re attempting to fade a tattoo on your back or another hard-to-reach spot.

    Tip: Test your lightening agent on a small, out-of-the-way patch of skin before applying it over a larger area to make sure you won’t react negatively to it. [6]

  4. 4 Continue treating your tattoo 3-5 times a day until you see results. Get in the habit of applying your lightening agent at least twice throughout the course of the day—once in the morning and once in the evening. You’ll need to be persistent with your chosen home remedy if it’s to have any effect.
    • Stop using a particular skin lightener if it begins to cause redness, irritation, blistering, or peeling. [7]
    • Even with continual applications, there’s a chance that your tattoo may not lose its vibrancy.

  1. 1 Mix up a basic homemade salt scrub. Combine ½ a cup (100 g) of coarse sea salt with 1 ⁄ 4 – 1 ⁄ 3 cup (59–79 mL) of olive, coconut, or almond oil in a small lidded container. Keep the container with the rest of your hygiene products, on your bedside table, or somewhere else where you’ll see it and remember to use it every day. [8]
    • If you like, you can also add a few drops of fragrant essential oils and some dried botanical elements to your salt scrub. This won’t affect its abrasive properties, but it will make it smell more pleasant. [9]
    • Salt scrubs are natural, easy to make, and highly effective as far as exfoliants go.
  2. 2 Pick up a gentle, vitamin-infused body scrub if you have sensitive skin. If you don’t like the idea of grinding a scratchy salt paste onto your extremities, you also have the option of buying a gentle commercial exfoliant designed specifically to nourish and protect skin. Along with abrasive elements, these products boast vitamins, minerals, and other key nutrients as main ingredients. [10]
    • Look for scrubs containing Vitamin C, which is especially good for maintaining soft, clear, glowing skin. [11]
    • Alternatively, you could try making your own nourishing body scrub using things like white or brown sugar, Epsom salts, shea butter, honey, coffee grounds, and aloe vera gel.
  3. 3 Apply a small amount of exfoliant directly to the tattoo. Scoop up a quarter-sized glob of your scrub with two fingers to start with and rub it onto the entire area. Smooth on additional exfoliant as needed to ensure that each part of the tattoo is covered with a thin layer.
    • You may need to use quite a bit of scrub if the tattoo you’re trying to erase is particularly large.
  4. 4 Massage the scrub into the tattoo vigorously using a pumice stone. Rather than trying to work the exfoliant in with your fingers, grab a pumice stone and rub it over the tattoo using small, circular motions. Apply light, steady pressure, and be careful not to scrub too hard. Do this for 30-60 seconds. [12]
    • Before you begin scrubbing, soak your pumice stone in a bowl of warm water. This will help it slide across your skin and cut down on unnecessary resistance. [13]
    • The pumice stone will cover a larger area and provide additional scouring power.

    Tip: The idea is to take off the outermost layer of skin a little at a time. Minor discomfort is normal, but if it hurts, try using a softer touch.

  5. 5 Rinse the area thoroughly with lukewarm water. Hold the exfoliated tattoo under a gentle stream to wash away the accumulated scrub and dead skin. Your skin will likely feel a little raw, so avoid using water that’s too hot, along with soaps or cleansers that might irritate or dry it out even more. [14]
    • It may be easier to hop in the shower if you can’t easily rinse your tattoo under the sink, or if you’re trying to fade multiple pieces at once.
    • If you like, you can apply little moisturizer after exfoliating to soothe and protect your skin. [15]
  6. 6 Repeat your exfoliation routine 2-3 times a day for about a month. In all likelihood, you’ll start to see a noticeable difference after a few weeks. Assuming you don’t, your only remaining option will be to talk to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about a formal tattoo removal procedure. [16]
    • Discontinue treatment immediately if you experience severe or prolonged skin irritation.

  1. 1 Talk to your dermatologist about a laser removal procedure. Laser removal is the only method that has been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of tattoos. During the procedure, specially-trained technicians use concentrated streams of light to break up the ink sitting deep below the surface of the skin. [17]
    • If you want guaranteed, permanent results, it’s highly recommended that you save up your money for a course of laser treatment.
    • While tattoo laser removal is extremely effective, it’s not quick or cheap—a single session can cost as much as $500, and in many cases it can take 2-6 sessions before you start to see a significant difference. [18]
    • Make sure you go to a licensed, reputable laser technician to get a tattoo removed. [19]
  2. 2 Receive a series of chemical peels to erase the tattoo gradually. This type of treatment is sometimes referred to as “chemical resurfacing. ” The way it works is that highly acidic chemicals are applied directly to the top layer of skin, causing it to die. After it sloughs off, the area is given time to heal, eventually leaving behind smooth, clear skin. [20]
    • Chemical peels were the most popular tattoo removal method before the introduction of light-based procedures. Even so, reports vary as to how well they work.
    • These treatments are not without risk. Possible complications include severe chemical burns and permanent scarring. [21]
  3. 3 Undergo surgery to have the tattoo partially removed. With traditional surgery, plastic surgeons actually cut out the layers of skin sitting on top of the embedded ink. The tattoo will no longer be as visible once new skin has grown in its place. [22]
    • Surgery can successfully fade tattoos to some degree, but in many cases surgeons aren’t safely able to cut deep enough to extract the majority of the ink. [23]
    • Like chemical peels it’s possible for a surgical operation to leave scars, bumps, discoloration, and other imperfections.
