Here are the best steps you can follow to keep your sessions pain-free: 1. Pick the right set-up; not every numbing cream is right for every tattoo.

If a client comes in with a random numbing cream off the shelf they’re going to need to reschedule; the right numbing cream makes a huge difference in how long it lasts and if it can be applied during their session.

If they bring in a cream without epinephrine, it’s going to wear off halfway through their tattoo and they’re going to get a very unpleasant surprise. You’ll want to remove dead skin and oil before you apply your numbing solution. Green soap will work just fine, but numbing washes (like SJ3) increase the numbing effect of other topicals by keeping the skin pH neutral.

Green soap as a small amount of alcohol in it, which can make skin more acidic and slow down or stop some creams and sprays. Apply the pre-deadener. and wait. Ideally, a client can do steps 2 and 3 at home, because after you’ve applied your pre-deadener you’ll need to wait 5-30 minutes for the area to numb.

Applying too many patches or topical systems or leaving them on for too long may cause serious side effects. Apply the lidocaine patch or topical system to clean, dry, intact skin as directed. Choose an area where the patch will not be rubbed by tight clothing.

Do not apply the patch or topical system to an open wound or cut, to skin that is irritated or red, or to skin that is affected by a rash, burn, or other skin problem. If irritation or a burning sensation occurs during lidocaine application, remove the lidocaine patch or system and do not reapply it until the irritation is gone.

Prescription patches and topical systems may be cut into smaller sizes with scissors prior to removal of the release liner. Be sure to remove the current patch before you apply a new one. Do not let lidocaine transdermal come in contact with your eyes. If lidocaine transdermal does touch your eye, immediately wash the eye with water or saline and protect the eye until sensation returns.

While you are wearing a lidocaine transdermal patch or system, protect the treated area from direct heat such as heating pads or electric blankets. You can apply the lidocaine 1. 8% topical system after moderate heat exposure, such as 15 minutes of heating pad exposure on a medium setting.

Do not bandage the affected area tightly. Do not shower, bathe, or go swimming while you are wearing the prescription lidocaine 5% transdermal patch. If you are using the prescription lidocaine 1. 8% topical system, you may shower for up to 10 minutes or wear it while immersed in water for up to 15 minutes.

If the lidocaine 1. 8% topical system becomes wet, gently pat the skin, but do not rub the skin or lidocaine 1. 8% topical system. If the lidocaine 1. 8% topical system comes off completely or lifts at the edges, reattach it by pressing firmly on the edges of the topical system or lifted areas.

If the lidocaine 1. 8% topical system comes off completely more than once and does not stick to the skin, remove it and apply a new lidocaine topical system not to exceed 12 hours of total use. Wash your hands after handling lidocaine patches or topical system.

Dosing – The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor’s orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

• For topical dosage form (ointment):
  • For pain and itching caused by minor skin conditions:
    • Adults—Apply to the affected area 3 or 4 times a day. The largest amount of ointment that should be used in a single application is 5 grams. If you use the 5% ointment, this is about 6 inches of ointment from the tube.
    • Children—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor.
• For topical dosage form (skin patch):
  • For pain caused by shingles:
    • Adults—Apply 1 to 3 patches to the painful area for up to 12 hours each day.
    • Children—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
• For topical dosage form (solution):
  • For treatment of irritated or sore mouth or throat:
    • Adults—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose is usually 15 milliliters (mL) tablespoonful every 3 hours. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. Do not use more than 8 doses in a 24-hour period.
    • Children 3 years of age and older—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor.
    • Children younger than 3 years of age—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The dose should be no more than 1. 2 mL applied to the immediate area with a cotton-tipped swab. Wait at least 3 hours between doses, and do not use more than 4 doses in a 12-hour period.
