Getting a tattoo after cosmetic surgery: – After cosmetic surgery, the body will be in need of rest in order to heal properly. During the first period after your surgery, you will not be able to get a tattoo despite longing commitment to it. Generally speaking, you will have to wait for a minimum of 2 months after your recovery period to start consider getting a tattoo (after the recovery, scars usually have not healed properly yet).
If the tattoo will be done on the operated area (for instance getting a tattoo on the abdomen after an abdominoplasty ), you will have to wait for a longer period (between 3 and 6 months). Some procedures are simply more complicated than others and therefore require longer convalescence and recovery periods.
However, it is important to consult your doctor at all times before indulging into any kind of adventure which may result in unwanted consequences.
How long after surgery can you get a tattoo on your scar?
Your tattoo could cause more scarring – This is primarily an issue for people who have or are prone to keloid scars. Keloid scars are usually thick and red with a raised, rounded, and irregular shape. Sometimes the scar tissue builds up long after the initial injury, or spreads beyond the borders of the wound.
If you have or are prone to keloid scarring, there’s a higher chance that getting a tattoo to cover your scar will make the scar worse. If you want to cover a newly formed keloid scar, wait at least a year until it’s completely healed.
For deeper or larger scars, you might have to wait much longer for than that, like 3 or 5 years. Tattooing a keloid scar that’s completely healed reduces the risk of worsening the scar.
Does surgery affect tattoo?
Tattoo Distortion/Removal If you had gotten a tattoo before having plastic surgery in the same area, there is a high chance that it will distort or even be removed from your body if it gets in the way of the surgical instruments or current procedures.

If you’re like many of our Orange County plastic surgery clients who’ve had tummy tucks but are a little self-conscious about the scar that may still be visible when wearing bikinis, etc… don’t be dismayed. You can tattoo over a scar. To get a permanent tattoo over the tummy tuck scar, you’ll need to wait about a year until the scar is fully healed. We’ve seen many beautiful vines, feathers, etc. , on patients who have chosen to get tattoos over their tummy tuck scars. It is recommended to wait as most scars become less visible with time. Unfortunately, waiting a year is not an easy thing to do here in Orange County where its swimsuit season year round so for those who want to cover up their tummy tuck scar before their scar has fully healed, there are temporary tattoos.
We’ve seen colorful crystal tattoos cover a tummy tuck scar perfectly. Even if your tummy tuck scar is not straight across, there are unique designs that come in pieces, so you can put them over your tummy tuck scar no matter how it’s shaped. Most are even water proof and reusable.
- Like other temporary type tattoos, they come on an adhesive strip;
- Most advise that you to take them off when you shower of bathe, and then reapply them as needed;
- Some come with adhesive to apply others, are self-adhesive or just dissolve after a few days of bathing;
Honestly some we’ve seen are so unique and pretty, I wouldn’t be surprised if people without tummy tuck scars chose to wear them with their favorite bikini (or without).
