What does Chris Hemsworth tattoo mean in extraction?

In Extraction, Chris Hemsworth’s mercenary Rake Tyler sports a tattoo design with a connection to his Marvel character, Thor. In the Netflix action movie Extraction , Chris Hemsworth’s mercenary Rake Tyler sports tattoos with a connection to his famous Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Thor.

It’s not the only MCU connection in Extraction , which is based on a comic book co-written by Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo. The script itself was also written by Joe Russo, and Extraction was directed by Marvel Studios stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave.

Set against the backdrop of Dhaka in Bangladesh, Extraction follows Rake Tyler on a mission to rescue the kidnapped son of a crime boss. Things go awry when the boss’s right-hand man tries to kill Tyler to get out of paying his fee, and the gang leader who kidnapped the boy sends his men to retrieve him, leaving Tyler fighting a war on two fronts.

But as a former soldier in the Special Air Service Regiment and an experienced gun-for-hire, Tyler won’t be taken down easily. There are four runes from Elder Futhark runic alphabet on his right bicep, which include a rune for the god Týr and a rune that represents man. Of greater interest, however, is the large tattoo on Tyler’s back (h/t Reddit user driftwood7386), which becomes a point of focus when he changes his clothes and his young charge, Ovi (Rudhraksh Jaiswal) looks at his scars. There’s an obvious Thor connection to the tattoos, since Thor hails from Norse mythology (though the MCU’s version of the character is revealed to be an alien). Hemsworth’s tattoos in Extraction were designed by another Marvel Studios creative: Matteo Silvi, who was a make-up artist on Avengers: Infinity War , Avengers: Endgame , and Avengers: Age of Ultron. In an interview with the Motion Picture Association’s  The Credits , Silvi says that he collaborated with graphic artist Virginia Lorenzetti to design around a dozen original tattoo designs for Hemsworth in the movie – and said that  Hemsworth himself had input on the designs: “I would show him ideas and he would say which ones he liked and which ones he didn’t.

The tattoo appears to based on the Viking compass, called Vegvísir, which is used as a charm to help guide people home, particularly through storms. Working from that, I started designing. Chris likes to join in the conversation.

It was really fun to create this character with him. ” Having played Thor on the big screen for almost a decade, Hemsworth may have been drawn to the Nordic tattoo designs as a tribute to his character. The Viking compass is also a good fit for the character of Rake Tyler , who finds himself lost after the death of his young son, but finds purpose again by protecting Ovi. The Avengers brought in a honorary member to replace Mark Ruffalo – Disney/Marvel Studios Mark Ruffalo’s co-stars respected his decision, but any tattoo that’s so intrinsically linked to the number six was always going to need a sixth person to get it on their body. Fortunately for the cast, they were able to find a willing — and fitting — participant to get in on the action with them. With the Hulk actor definitely out of the equation, they offered his spot to Josh Lord, their tattoo artist. Furthermore, the actors all contributed toward Lord’s tattoo.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Robert Downey Jr. recalled how the five of them became tattoo artists in their own right for the occasion. “Each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun and it was a total massacre.

Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us. ” Downey Jr. also stated that the matching tattoos were all Scarlett Johannsson’s idea and that Ruffalo wasn’t the only person who was initially resistant to the idea.

Why does Thor have a tattoo?

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains very light spoilers for Thor: Love And Thunder. If you have not yet seen the film, proceed at your own risk! Tom Hiddleston’s Loki isn’t featured in Thor: Love And Thunder (a bit of trivia that director Taika Waititi and co-star Chris Hemsworth like to joke about ), but the new blockbuster does find a way to honor the memory of the character.

In the scene where Thor goes to Russell Crowe’s Zeus hoping to get an army to help him stop Christian Bale’s Gorr The God Butcher, the God of Thunder’s clothes are ripped off and it’s revealed the he found time to get some serious ink after the events of Avengers: Infinity War , as it’s shown that he has a massive “RIP Loki” tattoo on his back.

It’s a great moment in the middle of Thor: Love And Thunder , and it turns out that it has ties back to a joke that got rejected from Thor: Ragnarok. While interviewing the stars of Thor: Love And Thunder at the movie’s recent Los Angeles press day, I asked Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi about the origins and design of Thor’s tribute to his deceased brother.

  • The writer/director/actor explained that he first had the idea for an “RIP Loki” tattoo while making his first Marvel movie, and he was encouraged by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to go even bigger with the concept while working on his second;

Said Waititi, Yeah, that was my [idea]. I tried to get that in Ragnarok. There was this little scene, and him and Loki were talking, and he goes like, ‘I thought you were dead! I mourned you! I got this tattoo!’ And he lifts up his sleeve and it says like, ‘RIP Loki.

  • ‘ We had another opportunity to do it this time, and Kevin [Feige] was like, ‘Yeah, let’s go big though;
  • Let’s put it all over his back;
  • ‘ Given that assignment, Chris Hemsworth and the filmmakers of Thor: Love And Thunder went to town giving Thor a wide variety of back art;

In addition to saying “RIP Loki” between the Avengers’ shoulders, there is a giant depiction of Loki’s helmet, a broken heart, a scroll, a moon, and a banner that reads “Rest In Mischief. ” It’s a hell of a lot better than a simple forearm tattoo. I suppose the reason why Kevin Feige might have said no to the idea in Thor: Ragnarok was because that would have meant the character sporting the ink through the adventures in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame , but a new era has begun in the Marvel Cinematic Universe , and part of the fresh chapter is that the God of Thunder has a lot of back tats.

Chiming in, Chris Hemsworth added that Thor almost had a forearm tattoo as well in Thor: Love And Thunder , but it had nothing to do with mourning his dead brother. Instead, the idea was a tribute to a shared love of rollerblading that the character has with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster.

Said the actor, We had another tattoo reference as well. When we were talking about rollerblading. Was it ‘Blade. Once you blade, you never fade. ‘ Yeah. But that didn’t make it in the movie. You can get a look at all of Thor’s body art on the big screen right now, as Thor: Love And Thunder is playing in theaters everywhere.

What is the Thor symbol?

The Thor’s Hammer or Hammer of Thor is an ancient Norse symbol. In Norse mythology, Thor is the god of thunder and his hammer (called Mjölnir) has the power of lightning. During the era of Viking ascendancy, miniature Thor’s Hammers were often used as religious amulets.

  1. Today, the Hammer is a major symbol for those who follow neo-Norse religions such as Asatru;
  2. Although its traditional origins are non-racist, and although most Asatruers today are not racist, the Thor’s Hammer symbol has been appropriated by neo-Nazis and other white supremacists, especially those who practice racist or white supremacist versions of neo-Norse beliefs under the guise of Odinism or Wotanism;

White supremacists will often even create racist versions of the Thor’s Hammer, incorporating swastikas or other hate symbols into the decoration. Despite the widespread use of the Thor’s Hammer symbol by white supremacists, the fact that it is an important symbol for non-racist Norse pagans means that one should never assume that the Thor’s Hammer appearing by itself necessarily denotes racism or white supremacy.

Can Thor get a tattoo?

Editor’s Note: The following contains Thor: Love and Thunder spoilers. Thor: Love and Thunder picks up with Thor ( Chris Hemsworth ) after the events of Avengers: Endgame. He ends his stint with the Guardians of the Galaxy and teams up with Valkyrie ( Tessa Thompson ), Korg ( Taika Waititi ), and his former girlfriend Jane Foster ( Natalie Portman ) as Mighty Thor.

  • Together, they face up against Gorr the God Butcher ( Christian Bale ), who plans to kill all the gods;
  • When Thor and the team make a trip to Omnipotence City in disguise to ask Zeus ( Russell Crowe ) for his help, Zeus demands that Thor remove his disguise;

After he refuses, Zeus flicks off Thor’s disguise, taking off Thor’s clothes in the process and revealing Thor’s newly tattooed back. As seen at the beginning of Love and Thunder , Thor gets back in shape, going from sad bod to god bod. Somewhere in that period of time, he also got a few tattoos that hold a lot of meaning for Thor. The most prominent tattoo on Thor’s back is his tribute to his late brother, Loki ( Tom Hiddleston ). A large version of Loki’s classic helmet centers his back with the inscription above that reads “RIP Loki. ” Between the phrase and the helmet is a headstone. To the left of the helmet, there’s another phrase that reads “Brothers;” to the right of it, a crescent moon, which could also be a nod to his fallen brother.

  1. Located to the left of Loki’s helmet and under the phrase “Brothers” there’s a flower tattoo; its meaning is unknown;
  2. Underneath Loki’s helmet is a broken heart;
  3. It’s unclear if it’s specifically for Loki or general symbol for the amount of loss Thor’s had over the years, but the tramp stamp banner under it that reads “Rest in Mischief” definitely is for Loki;

Thor’s history with his adopted brother has been complicated to say the least. Loki is the villain of both the first Thor and first Avengers movie. They have fought alongside each other and against each other numerous times, usually with Loki seemingly dying.

The last time the brothers were seen together was at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War where Thanos ( Josh Brolin ) attacked their ship and choked Loki to death in front of Thor. Though there are variant versions of Loki out in the Sacred Timeline, as seen in the Loki series, the version of Loki Thor knew is gone.

As he told his brother on Sakaar in Thor: Ragnarok , Thor thought the world of him and believed he could be more than just the Asgardian God of Mischief. Despite their troublesome history, he loved his brother and at some point chose to use his back as a canvas to memorialize Loki.

Loki isn’t the only fallen person represented on Thor’s toned, tattooed back. To the right of the Loki helmet is a scroll with a list of names of people in Thor’s life who have died. The first name on the list is “Mother” in reference to his mother, Frigga ( Rene Russo ) who died during Thor: The Dark World.

The next name is “Father” referring to Odin ( Anthony Hopkins ) who went to Valhalla in Thor: Ragnarok. Under his parents is Heimdall ( Idris Elba ), Thor’s best friend who also died at the hands of Thanos in the beginning of Infinity War. In addition to his larger tribute, Loki’s name makes an appearance on the tattooed scroll.

The last two names on the list aren’t Asgardian– they’re Avengers. Tony Stark ( Robert Downey Jr. ) and Natasha Romanoff ( Scarlett Johansson ) both died in Avengers: Endgame in their efforts to bring back everyone Thanos snapped away.

Natasha died during her trip with Hawkeye ( Jeremy Renner ) to Vormir in order to retrieve the Soul Stone; Tony died after snapping Thanos and his army out of existence with a new Infinity Gauntlet from his Iron Man suit. Black Widow and Iron Man fought alongside Thor as part of the original six Avengers for years, so to remember them here shows how important those friendships were to him.

The God of Thunder has lost many people close to him over the course of his long life. The losses continue in Love and Thunder ; he loses Jane, the love of his life, after she sacrifices herself to destroy the Necrosword.

We can expect Thor planning to add a Jane tribute to his back in the near future. Though they’re gone, these tattoos serve to keep Thor’s loved ones with him wherever he goes. Check out more mighty stories about Thor: Love and Thunder here:
