How To Tattoo Eyeballs?

How To Tattoo Eyeballs

What is eyeball tattooing? – Eyeball tattooing is a term describing the permanent colouring of the white of the eye (called the sclera). It is performed by injecting ink with a needle underneath the top layer of the eye onto the sclera, in several locations, from where the ink then slowly spreads to cover all of the sclera.

Is it possible to tattoo eyeballs?

Just as the name suggests, eye tattoos are a controversial trend that involves injecting ink directly into your eyeball. Also called sclera tattoos, this unique, often vibrantly colored ink is injected under the conjunctiva (aka the clear membrane on the front of your eye) and over the sclera (the whites of your eyes) in order to stain the area around the cornea a new hue.

How do they tattoo your eyeball?

In 2017, we reported on Canadian model Catt Gallinger , the victim of an eye tattoo (also known as a sclera tattoo) gone wrong — those viral snapshots of her eye crying purple tears had people feeling shaken. To be clear, this isn’t a tattoo in the traditional sense.

  1. Instead, an artist, in this case, injects a tiny amount of ink under the conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the front of the eye) and over the sclera (the whites of the eye);
  2. The procedure was developed about 10 years ago by body-modification expert Luna Cobra and the late Shannon Larratt, who founded BME , the first extensive body modification e-zine;

Cobra tells Allure he initially performed it “a few different ways” on Larratt and two other subjects. “One method worked best, so I spent the next two years refining it,” says Cobra, who has gone on to safely tattoo hundreds of eyeballs. Still, just because he dreamed up eyeball tattoos doesn’t mean he thinks they’re a good idea (to note, neither Allure nor the American Academy of Opthalmology recommend or endorse sclera tattoos).

In fact, he tries to talk clients out of it. “To be honest, every person that contacts me about eyeball tattoos gets the same letter back,” he says. “I explain they really should invest in quality contacts and wear those for a long time.

” If they insist on the real thing? “I tell them if you think there’s even a possibility you might not want this in the future, please don’t get it done because you can’t reverse it,” he says. After refining and perfecting the process, Cobra’s more comfortable performing sclera tattoos now than he was at first.

“For the first five years, doing sclera tattoos really bothered me,” he recalls. “I was really worried about the clients — I’d call them for days to make sure they were okay. ” That’s because the medical risks are pretty scary: Once another substance is injected into the layers of the eye, it can cause chronic inflammation of the wall of the eye, says Kendall E.

Donaldson , an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. That not’s the worst of it, as New York City-based ophthalmologist Ilyse Haberman adds. “If the ink is not injected into the right place, the needle can perforate the eye and the ink can be injected into the eyeball itself,” she explains.

Do eyeball tattoos hurt?

History [ edit ] – In late 2007, Body Modification Ezine wrote an article describing the first three scleral tattoo procedures performed on sighted eyes. The artist known as Luna Cobra (Howard “Howie” Rollins) experimented on three volunteers; Shannon Larratt , Joshua Matthew Rahn and Paul Mowery (aka “Pauly Unstoppable”, today known as Farrah Flawless).

[2] [3] [4] Larratt got the idea after Dutch eye surgeon Gerrit R. Melles gave Shannon’s then-wife Rachel Larratt an eye implant. [5] The technique is similar to the established method practiced by eye surgeons who use implants on their patients for various eye problems, with the difference that it is performed for aesthetic reasons on healthy eyes with visible implants.

[6] She had a small piece of thin platinum jewelry inserted over the sclera , which is the white layer of the eye, and under the conjunctiva , which is a clear layer covering the sclera. The method Melles had developed included injecting a small drop of saline in order to create a fluid filled pocket before inserting the implant into this pocket, which would gradually shrink and leave only the jewelry behind.

Shannon then imagined the saline being replaced with ink, which would spread and end up as a colored layer between the sclera and the conjunctiva, giving the white of the eye a new color. [7] Being a fan of Frank Herbert ‘s Dune , Shannon had photoshopped the eyes of his own picture to look like the blue eyes of the Fremen in the novel.

He and Luna Cobra then tried to figure out how to color his eyes permanently blue. Eventually Cobra agreed to give it a try if Shannon could find two other people willing to have their eyeballs colored (of these three only Farrah is still alive, making her the person in the world who has had sclera tattoos for the longest period of time).

  • [8] Both Larratt and Rahn died from causes unrelated to the procedure;
  • Luna Cobra tried two different procedures, the first covering the needle with ink and puncturing the eye;
  • This method was deemed unsuccessful, and the second method was attempted;

This procedure, in which the sclera was injected with blue dye, was successful. The procedures were “effectively painless because there aren’t nerve endings in the surface of the eye,” says the article’s author Shannon Larratt. The aftereffects include “fairly minor” pain, bruising, and some discomfort.

Also, the author, who had the procedure performed on himself, seems to have some blisters between the sclera and conjunctiva. The author twice indicates the risks and possible complications, the most important including blindness, of the procedure and warns that it should not be performed without a professional.

[9] Scleral tattooing is still a new body modification, and potential longterm effects have therefore still not manifested themselves.

How long does an eyeball tattoo last?

On the skin, the laser works great, gradually fading the tattoo without causing scarring. On the eyeball, it would cause an explosion of pigment which, because the eyeball is lined with pigment, would cause  an explosion of the eyeball. So, at present, there is no way of clearing, removing or fading these tattoos.

  • They will be there forever, for everyone to see, whether you want them to, or not;
  • Our eyes are so precious;
  • They are the first thing most people look at when they want to learn more about us;
  • When we tattoo our eyes, we attempt to mask our true beauty;

Is it possible that eyeball tattoos are the most visible form of hiding – that while they have a shock value and are impossible not to notice, their real effect is to obscure our true nature – our deep beauty and sensitivity – from those around us? Pinky 4/24/2015 12:42:27 pm You see a person through their eyes – it’s the window to their soul.

If the eyes are tattooed and not in their natural state, who are we really looking at? A person hiding behind a tattoo? I’ve known people who have skin tattoos and after some time (months or years) for many the novelty wears off and they’ve wanted them removed.

With skin tattoos you can get them removed via lazer surgery but eye tattoos you can’t even remove them! Eye tattoos are permanent and what if you change your mind after sometime?? You’re stuck with having your eyes look like that forever! There are other ways to decorate your eyes, like coloured contact lens.

Anne 5/17/2016 08:47:10 pm There are indeed other ways to decorate ourselves, Pinky, that come with much less risk and have the added bonus of being much less dangerous and reversible. Contact lenses would be preferable, but these also come with risks, and should only be used under supervision from an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Marianna 4/24/2015 09:23:01 pm HI Anne, what are the risks of getting the tattoos in the first place? Surely the process of putting ink into the eye can potentially damage the eye? Hi Marianna, absolutely, there are risks. We are talking about doing a surgical procedure on the eye, for which those of us who are licensed spend years in training! The most obvious risks are perforating the eyeball, causing bleeding into the eye, retinal detachment, infection, all of which could cause loss of vision and loss of the eye.

  1. Increasingly, tattoos are being associated with inflammation in the body, and as skin tattoos are causing eye inflammation, it makes sense that eye tattoos would cause more;
  2. The main risk would be tattoo regret, which in this case is untreatable;

Giselle 4/24/2015 10:37:16 pm Absolutely frightening that this is happening – to look into an eye that has been tattooed brings nothing but deep sadness. Anne 5/17/2016 08:52:27 pm Hi Giselle, To look into an eye that has been tattooed is a beautiful opportunity to observe, read and deepen our awareness and understanding.

We all do things for a reason and the more we can understand why someone would make such a choice, the more we can open and accept them as they are. We are all equally beautiful on the inside. Not allowing others to see who we are through our eyes feels like we are shutting ourselves off from the world totally.

It feels like death – an existence that is all about getting through life rather than living life. Tattooing your eyeballs feels like the final close down from the world. Anne 5/17/2016 08:49:57 pm Hi Susan, we can still look deeply into someone’s eyes, even if they have been tattooed, and it is important to remember that those eyes belong to a deeply sensitive person, just like us.

They may have rejected their own natural beauty, but we can still see them as the beautiful person they truly are. Wow, that is sickening looking at that eyeball. Ouch! http://www. findtattooremoval. com. au/ I’m curious as to why the eyeball tattoos are so permanent.

A subconjunctival hemorrhage, which I assume is blood in the same place as the ink, will clear in a week or two yet the tattoo ink remains indefinitely. Why is this? Anne Malatt 2/2/2017 06:14:07 am Hi Ken, Great question. Yes, the ink is in the subconjunctival space (hopefully that is as deep as they go, anyway!).

It is permanent for the same reason a skin tattoo is permanent. A skin bruise or an eye bruise clear after a few days to weeks because the body’s white blood cells come in and clean up the debris. The tattoo ink particles are too large for the white cells to ingest, so they stay put.

That is the principle of laser tattoo removal – it breaks the pigment granules up into smaller particles that the body’s cells can then clear. The problem is that you cannot do this to the eye – the laser energy would be absorbed by the pigment in the eyeball and cause severe damage.

Mike 10/7/2019 04:25:13 pm Considering getting a tattoo such as this right now, of course by doctors and not some street artist. Since I don’t have much to lose, seems like a fun last hurrah. Hi Mike, if you are alive with two healthy eyes, you have a lot to lose! You can lose your eyesight, and if you get an infection, it could spread to the brain or further and you could lost your life.

I would suggest that you work on looking at why you think you don’t have a lot to lose in life, rather than getting a tattoo to numb and distract you from what you are feeling. And as an eye doctor, I sincerely hope that there are no doctors out there offering this procedure – there is nothing medical or healing about it.

How much does it cost to tattoo your eyeballs?

How Much Does A Scleral Tattoo Cost? – Getting the whites of your eye colored in a scleral tattoo, or eye tattoo, can cost $450 or more. Please note that the procedure of getting a scleral tattoo has significant risks associated with it, such as possible loss of vision, severe infections, and possibly permanent eye damage.

Is scleral tattooing safe?

‘ We caution patients against the practice of scleral tattooing due to the very real danger of permanent blindness or loss of eye and advise patients to seek medical attention immediately for any adverse events,’ the report says.

What do eyeball tattoos feel like?

How To Tattoo Eyeballs Yes, there is such a thing as an eyeball tattoo. Yes, it is as dangerous and painful as you can imagine it to be. Eyeball tattoo is done by injecting coloured ink into the white part of the eyeball. The medical fraternity and the general public is, of course, wary about it since it pertains one of the most sensitive areas of the body.

  1. Recently, there were reports of a Canadian model turning blind and living with pain in one eye after she tattooed her eyeball with purple ink;
  2. Nonetheless, there are people who go for it;
  3. Just Google eyeball tattoos and you’ll see tons of pictures of people tattooing their eyeballs to different hues;

There hadn’t been a ‘daredevil’ in India who’d tried eyeball tattooing, until now. Delhi-based 28-year-old tattoo artist Karan got his eyeballs inked black in September this year. I chatted with Karan about his experience and came back shocked, impressed and concerned.

What made you get your eyeballs tattooed? My team of tattoo artists and I have been working on a full bodysuit tattoo on me (covering the entire body with tattoos) since the past 6 months. We have finished half of my body and I had already started to look like a superhuman character from some sci fi movie.

So I thought why not get my eyeballs tattooed as well. Another reason while it is relatively common abroad, no one from India has ever got eyeball tattoo done. I wanted to be the first Indian to do this. I have spent a number of months researching on this. Getting an eyeball tattoo is no joke.

I wanted to be absolutely sure that I was in expert hands. So I got in touch with Howard Smith at his tattoo studio in New York. Howard is the guy who’s invented the technique of eyeball tattooing. Here are things your tattoo artist wants you to know Surely you must have had some apprehensions about getting one of the most sensitive areas of your body tattooed? I have been getting inked since I was 13.

I have got my body pierced about 80 to 90 times and about 60 times, I have done the piercings on my own while undergoing piercing training in the US. Presently, I have 32 piercings on my body. I am absolutely not scared of pain. I have immense self control.

I believe I m bigger than pain and so it doesn t control me. I spent about 6 months thinking about how I would look with my eyeballs tattooed, whether I was ready for it and only then did I take the decision to do it.

I got it done from the inventor of eyeball tattoos because I wanted the absolute best. How To Tattoo Eyeballs What does eyeball tattooing involve? The process is also called scleral tattooing. Sclera is the white part of the eyeball. The ink is injected into the white part of eyeball so that part gets dyed. I have dyed my eyeball black, so now I have all black eyes. There are other colours available as well. Red is not used since it is known to create some problems in the eye.

  • The entire procedure requires 2 sittings;
  • On day one, the process takes 2-4 hours for both eyeballs;
  • Then you need to rest for 2 days;
  • On the fourth day, it ll take about 2-4 hours again;
  • What does it feel like getting your eyeballs tattooed? When the ink is being injected in your eye, it feels like a burning needle is being inserted into your eyeballs;

You have take care not to move your eyeballs when the needle is inserted, because if you do, the scleral membrane will tear. That is disastrous. Before the procedure, Howard had asked me if I wanted to take a tablet for alleviating pain. I didn t want to. So I refused.

I kept my eyeballs open on my own. I knew what I was going to feel and I have immense self control, so I did not move my eyeballs. I kept focused on one point throughout the procedure. There were times when I felt like squeezing my eyes shut and I had the burning sensation but I didn t flinch.

What s the status of your eyes now? What aftercare did you have to follow? Right now my eyesight is completely normal. For a few days after the eyeball tattoo, I had to wear sunglasses and keep my eyes protected from the sun. The burning sensation lasted for a week and my eyes were swollen for sometime.

  1. Recently, there were reports of a Canadian model becoming blind in one eye because her eyeball tattoo went wrong;
  2. What do you think went wrong? According to me, the tattoo artist must have overfilled her scleral membrane with the dye;

Once the ink is injected, it spreads slowly inside the eye. It needs to be done gradually and that s why mine was done over a period of 2-4 days. How long do eyeballs tattoo last for? I know of a person who got it done 10 years ago and he still has it. There have been no studies done in this regard.

What would you like to say to someone who wants to get their eyeballs tattooed? Eyeball tattooing is a life changing decision. You have to be absolutely sure of it. Also, you need immense self control. You should be aware of the pain that will follow.

Who invented eyeball tattoo?

Delhi-based 28-year-old Karan has become the first Indian to get his eyeballs tattooed. Karan, a full-time professional tattoo artist and piercer, claims that it does not involve risks and is just a way to look and feel different, first  reported  by  DNA.

At 16, he started tattooing as a hobby and soon, opened up his own tattoo studio in Delhi. He told  NDTV  that six months after beginning his full body suit, the tattoo artist began to wonder what he would look like if he had his eyeballs tattooed.

  • He said he spent months debating whether to opt for the permanent procedure and discussed it with his family and friends;
  • The procedure, which cost lakhs, was done by an Australian tattoo artist, who Karan claims invented eyeball tattooing, at a tattoo studio in New York, US;

But the medical fraternity isn’t impressed with this act. “In all my career, I have never heard of anything like this. I did not even know that something like this exists and that people are crazy enough to get it done. I cannot really comment on the risks involved,” Dr Atul Kumar, head of ophthalmology department, AIIMS, told  DNA.

  • Meanwhile, Melbourne-based tattoo artist Luna Cobra, who pioneered eyeball tattooing, has supported calls from a leading medical body to ban the eye-watering procedure in Australia and New Zealand after rampant malpractice;

The Melbourne-based practitioner, who has tattooed the eyes of hundreds of clients worldwide, told  The New Daily  he backed the calls by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. The high-risk procedure involves permanently changing the colour of the white part of the eye or sclera using coloured dye that can lead to infection, intense pain and permanent vision loss..

What is white of eye?

Listen to pronunciation. (SKLAYR-uh) The white layer of the eye that covers most of the outside of the eyeball.

Where is Luna Cobra located?

IT SOUNDS like the really gross scene in a horror movie. The lead character is lying down, desperately trying not to move, as a rubber-gloved hand clutches a needle just inches from his eyeball. The needle moves in closer, the metal edge catching the light, so close the man can no longer focus on it properly — it’s just a blur of steel.

Then the sharp edge pushes against the cornea and pierces the delicate membrane. Continuing to the white of the eye, the needle squirts a liquid that can never be removed. Not your cup of tea? Well, actually, it’s the process of eye tattooing — the practice of injecting indelible ink into the eyeball to permanently colour its surface.

And the NSW Government has just regulated it bringing something only a handful of Australians have tried out into the open. Labor Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord denounced the decision, calling it “ridiculous” and said “instead of regulating eye tattooing, they should be banning it”.

But a leading proponent of the craft has told news. com. au that eye tattooing was not a danger to the public, and cigarettes, sugar consumption and even “extra-large Slushies” were far worse for people. ‘IT’S LIKE SKYDIVING OR BUNGEE JUMPING’ Admittedly, it’s a niche market.

By some estimates only 20 Australians have undergone eye tattoo procedures. One is Ox Brady, from the Sunshine Coast, who had his eyes dyed black five years ago. While it was no easy decision he loved the look so much, he’d do it all over again if he could.

“It was the weirdest, most bizarre, sensation I’ve ever felt but in a good way. It wasn’t painful but I’ve got a good pain threshold,” he told news. com. au. Inking his eyes was safer than wearing oversized contact lenses, the only kind that would achieve the same effect he said, as he was concerned they could scratch the penetrative film on his sclera, or the whites of the eye.

However, the reaction from passers-by can be extreme. “Some people get too scared to think, they don’t know what it is but others are all good. Once you get to know me I’m just a normal person,” said Mr Brady, who also sports top-to-toe body tattoos as well as silicone implants and magnets under his skin.

What about children? Do they freak out when they see a man with black spheres for eyes? “People think kids are going to be scared but, strangely enough, a lot come up to me and think it’s awesome. ” Kylie Garth from Western Australia also said the procedure, to add a pale blue hue to her eyeballs, was painless.

But that didn’t mean it wasn’t terrifying. “There’s always that little element of fear so I was a bit scared,” she said of the day she had her eyeball tattoo done. “I knew that it wasn’t painful but still, when you’re lying in a chair and there’s a needle coming for your eye there’s always going to be that moment where you’re like ‘f***’.

“It’s the strangest thing, I felt some pressure, like a little bit of sand in my eye and then it was done. I stood up and burst into tears afterwards because it was mentally so intense. It’s like skydiving or bungee jumping — you know it’s safe but still actually doing it is crazy.

It was scarier than skydiving actually — I would go skydiving again before I had my eye done. ” Luna Cobra, who is a body modification expert based in Melbourne and the US, said he has inked 10 Australian eyes. “The lids are held open gently, otherwise you bruise it,” he explained to ABC’s 7.

  • 30;
  • “Then it’s just kind of hand done;
  • It’s like a hand poking procedure where you go in that certain layer;
  • You don’t have actual nerve endings in your eyeball itself, so [like] if you put in contacts or something it just feels weird;

” ‘IT IS BECOMING A TREND’ Mr Cobra, who is credited with inventing the procedure, said he goes nowhere near the iris with the liquid only delivered to the sclera. The lens remains clear and so sight is not impaired. The results are completely irreversible.

“I think it’s just becoming a trend among people that just want to be super-extreme. But the worry is that they are just getting anyone to do it — or doing it themselves — and a lot of people have been hurt, gone blind or lost eyes from this — although I want to stress that hasn’t happened to any of my clients,” he said.

“But if some guy is sitting in his bathroom with boiled-down pen ink then he’s probably going to f*** himself up. ” A popular, and somewhat menacing, option is to turn your eyes jet black. It certainly worked for Jason Barnum, who in 2012 faced an Alaskan court with half of his face tattooed , including a skull inked onto his head and an entirely black eyeball.

  • ‘A MAJOR STUFF UP’ The NSW Government on Friday amended the Public Health Act 2010 to include eye tattooing as a “skin penetration procedure” along with tongue piercing;
  • Labor’s Mr Secord told news;
  • com;
  • au it was “a major stuff up” and placing a needle in the eye could lead to blindness and even cancer;

“The last thing you should be doing is puncturing your eye. It’s absolutely ridiculous and instead of regulating and legislating you should be banning it. “Doctors have advised they are very reluctant to undertake any procedure involving eyes and the Baird Government should be not regulating this area.

” Mr Secord said he suspected the Government had signed off on a, “whole bunch of regulations and didn’t read them”. Asked why individuals shouldn’t be given the freedom to modify their own bodies, however distasteful it may be to others, he said, “we have rules for all kind of things in our society to protect people, like wearing helmets, and this is just something we don’t need”.

But Mr Cobra said the claims were nonsense. “Any reports of a link between cancer and eyeball tattoos is only speculation and this has never been reported since I started this in 2007,” he said. The shadow Health Minister just wanted to “kick up a fuss at any local pop culture”, said Mr Cobra, and had “no real concern” for the health of Australians.

“There is a much bigger effect on the health and hospital system due to cigarettes, sugar and fat consumption,” he told news. com. au. “Why can we buy an extra large Slushi at a 7-Eleven? That is crazy bad for you.

” BAN THE PRACTICE Health Minister Jillian Skinner said eye tattooing hadn’t been illegal but there had been no regulatory framework applied as it wasn’t defined in the Act despite the risk of bloodborne viruses. “I have asked the NSW Ministry of Health to continue to investigate the risks associated with eyeball tattooing.
